Innovations for In-Bed Patient Care During the Pandemic

Over the last year, we have witnessed an extreme burden on healthcare professionals and healthcare systems as well as an increased demand for sufficient quality and quantity of medical equipment. As a manufacturer and an innovator, we were pleased to be able to cover the surge in demand for hospital beds and ensure both a temporary and permanent expansion and improvement of the bed capacity throughout our region. Advanced LINET technologies have proven their strength during the current coronavirus pandemic.

Our invention – bed-framed lateral tilt and especially the Automatic Lateral Therapy smart function, which tilts the bed to the sides automatically (+/- 30°) in predefined cycles, is used to prevent ARDS. Explore the Benefits of Lateral Tilt during Mechanical Ventilation

Respiratory failure is always challenging and requires a systemic individualized approach to each patient. Precise differential diagnostics are usually combined with several therapeutic interventions. The combination of lateral tilt and the EIT method can only be effective if it is a component of such complete respiratory care.

The effect of Automatic Lateral Therapy (ALT) on the Multicare bed is through the promotion of ventilation distribution. The fundamental innovation in mechanical lung ventilation – “Continuous, Individualised Ventilation Care“ is safe and radiation-free and based on a combination of Bed-framed lateral tilt and Electrical Impedance Tomography. Using ALT plus EIT is a real breakthrough because it allows treatment to be individualized for each patient and it is much safer and easier for both the patients and the physicians.

Nick Mlcek   

Mlcek Mikulas is the Deputy Director of the Experimental Physiology Lab and the Head of the Medical Simulation Center for the First Faculty of Medicine at Charles University in Prague. He graduated from Charles University where he obtained a Ph.D. from the Department of Physiology. His thesis topic was based on computational modeling of the cardiac electrical field and excitation-contraction coupling. Since then, Dr. Mlcek's scientific interest has moved to experimental physiology focusing on interactions of the cardiopulmonary system. The major research models that he has been using over the past 10 years include acute respiratory distress (ARDS), extracorporeal membranous oxygenation (ECMO) and cardiopulmonary resuscitation. He has published over 35 papers based on his research in scientific journals. As an Assistant Professor, Dr. Mlcek lectures and runs seminars and labs in Human Physiology. In addition, he helps design and run specialized post-graduate courses aimed at ventilation therapy and trauma management in the Medical Simulation Centre.

 

Meet Koen de Doncker presenting LIVE Prone Program by LINET

Prone positioning is the procedure of turning a patient face-down. Usually in the ICU as many as 8 staff members are needed to reposition a patient to the prone position – risking both injury to themselves and increasing the risk of exposure to a patient.

Prone Program by LINET integrates the advanced features of the LINET solution for critical care. The program can help simplify prone positioning by using the lateral tilt of the bed and enables a safe stay in the prone position.

Thanks to the lateral tilt it is possible to turn the patient to the prone position with the help of just 3 staff members. The lateral tilt helps to turn the patient gently and with minimal physical effort. Hands-free operation using foot controls increases the efficiency of the atraumatic patient turn method. Moreover, the caregiver has both hands free to devote full attention to the patient with even less effort.

LINET support surfaces enable a safe stay in the prone position due to a permanent deflation of the top deck air cells to make space for body parts for prone nursing. The prone position can be used for a long time:
– for 16 up to 20 hours in the prone position
– for 8 hours in the supine position (during care moments, examinations, and visiting)

Koen De Doncker has more than 25 years of experience in moving and handling techniques. As an osteopath and master in physical therapy and motor rehabilitation, Koen built up his experience when he was working with physically and mentally disabled people. Due to his large interest in solving the transfer problems of his patients, he decided to study Business ergonomics and product development at the University of Antwerp Management School, to be able to develop new tools and helping aids. With this background and experience he organizes national and international trainings/workshops on this topic, preferably ‘on the job.’
